Molino Stewart principal Neil Dufty has authored an article recently published in the April 2022 edition of the Australian Journal of Emergency Management about the use of heat refuges during heatwave emergencies. Heatwaves are a potentially deadly hazard in Australia that can cause heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Neil’s article discusses a heat refuge strategy developed by Molino Stewart for the Blacktown City Local Government Area (LGA) in Western Sydney. Blacktown LGA is subject to high summer temperatures due to its geography and urban heat island effects. The newly developed heat refuge strategy is built on the same principles of emergency management that apply to other natural hazards such as floods and bushfires and the strategy was trialed over the summer of 2021-22.
